Auxiliary Bishop of Newark
Bishop Elias Lorenzo was born in October 1960 in Brooklyn. His early years were spent in Sunset Park, where he attended St. Agatha Parish Elementary School. He continued his education at Cathedral Preparatory School and Seminary. These early academic and spiritual environments fostered a deep connection to learning and prayer, shaping his understanding of service from a young age.
Bishop later enrolled at Don Bosco College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. His call to religious life led him to St. Mary's Abbey in Morris Township, where he began his monastic journey. He made his first profession of vows in March 1985 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1989.
Dedication to Education
Bishop's path in education began early in his monastic life. As a young monk and priest, he joined the faculty at Delbarton School in Morristown, serving as a teacher and later as director of campus ministry. He coordinated retreats and service activities for students, ensuring faith and education went hand in hand. His commitment deepened as he served as vice president and worked closely with the board of trustees.
Throughout his time in education, he maintained direct involvement with students and staff. He remained in the classroom while holding leadership roles, staying engaged in liturgies and shaping student programs through his presence and planning.
Academic and Pastoral Preparation
Alongside his teaching and pastoral work, he pursued deeper academic formation. He completed a Master of Liturgical Theology at St. John's University in Collegeville, gaining a deeper understanding of worship and its role in shaping community life.
Bishop also earned a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology from Seton Hall University, which helped him approach ministry with greater emotional awareness. Later, he pursued a Licentiate in Canon Law at the Catholic University of America. These studies gave him a comprehensive foundation in liturgy, psychology, and canon law skills that became crucial in pastoral and community leadership.
Service in Monastic Leadership
Bishop's leadership began at St. Mary's Abbey in 1995, where he served as prior. This role prepared him for broader responsibilities. In 2009, he moved to Rome to serve as prior of the Primatial Abbey of Sant’ Anselmo. This international Benedictine community brought him into contact with monks from over thirty countries, broadening his perspective.
He was later appointed procurator general of the Order of Saint Benedict, representing Benedictine communities worldwide to the Vatican. As canonist for the Benedictine Confederation, he supported formation efforts and collaborated with abbots to strengthen unity across monastic communities.
In 2016, he was elected abbot president of the American-Cassinese Congregation, focusing on leadership in North America. Throughout each role, his approach remained consistent: listen, learn, and serve with care.
Global Work in Education and Service
Bishop extended his leadership through educational outreach as a founding member and president of the International Commission for Benedictine Education. This work took him to Benedictine schools across continents, where he encouraged school communities to pursue both academic growth and character development. His years of teaching allowed him to build trust with educators and leaders worldwide.
Bishop also served on the advisory board of Operation Smile International. His participation in medical missions to countries such as Bolivia, China, Honduras, India, Kenya, Nicaragua, and the Philippines reflected his willingness to support humanitarian work with a grounded, adaptable presence.

Emphasis on Safe and Accountable Structures
His commitment to safety and transparency has been consistent. He served on liturgical commissions in the Diocese of Paterson and worked as a vicar for religious in the Diocese of Metuchen, where he engaged with clergy and laity alike.
Bishop played a foundational role at Praesidium, Inc., first as a member of the canonical counsel, contributing to the development of standards to protect vulnerable populations. As a member of the client advisory board for the Conference of Major Superiors of Men, he added a pastoral voice to conversations about organizational safety and risk management.
He values clear procedures and ethical structures, seeing them as essential to building trust and ensuring responsible leadership.
Episcopal Ministry
On February 27, 2020, he was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Newark by the late Pope Francis. His episcopal consecration took place on June 30 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
In this role, he serves Union County and contributes to pastoral ministry, administration, and canonical matters throughout the archdiocese. His responsibilities demand careful communication and consistent discernment.
